Inspired by Indian culture and heritage, at Needle and Quest our range of dhurries are a glimpse of the rich tradition of craftsmanship and labour of love.
In any beautiful room, flooring is what lights up the atmosphere. Begin with a great rug or carpet and rest all falls into place. And the textile heritage of India which focuses on natural colours and patterns, creating carpets is sheer bliss. Long before the arrival of Mughals, Indian rug-making was simple. The Mughals introduced motifs and lavish designs to create some opulent rugs. India practiced the ‘flat weave’, made without the use of pile or backing, consisting of horizontal threads woven over and under vertical threads. Tightly woven, these rugs are reversible and tough. In India, these beautiful floor accents are known as Dhurries.
Dhurries are made out of several materials like cotton, wool, alpaca, silk or jute. Each design is handmade with unique patterns, representing the weaver’s own personal history. In olden times dhurries were adorned with religious or spiritual symbols, but today they range from floral, geometric to many contemporary designs. Hand woven cotton dhurries make for a great family tradition. They can be handed down through generations, if they are preserved and taken care of.
These hand-woven beauties made from natural colours and their exciting patterns add cheer to any room they are placed in. The idea behind our Dhurrie collection is to help people create a soulful space that brings them happiness and comfort with products that are environment friendly.
In this spirit, here is a short video of one of our talented master artisans making a Dhurrie while singing a local folk song that relays her journey of creating this beautiful piece of art. We at Needle and Quest want to spread joy of enjoying handcrafted products by keeping sustainability and well-being of our craftsmen at the heart of our creations.
